12 Days: Machupicchu, Classic Inca Trail, Cusco and Sacred Valley

Day 1: Flight from Home To Lima, Peru. Usually you will arrive in Lima around midnight. Our staff will transfer you to the Hotel for overnight in Lima. Dinner on your own (usually on the plane.) Welcome to Peru.

Day 2: Pick up from hotel after breakfast and transfer to the airport for your flight from Lima to Cuzco (specific time depending on flight schedules.) Exchange currency and learn about the activities, then drive to the Ollantaytambo Valley – the Sacred Valley of the Incas, which is surrounded by the high peaks of the Andes. Take the rest of the day to relax, acclimate, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings from your hotel. We will welcome you with a buffet lunch (Soltero Andino – Peruvian Salad, with corn, beans, cheese, potatoes, carrots, red onions, yellow chili pepper, black olives, lemon and aromatic medicinal plant tea.) Note: Ollantaytambo is at approx. 9,000 ft. Being lower than Cusco, it will make it easier to acclimatize to the altitude. For your convenience, we provide water and energy bars daily. In addition, please bring 1 daily pack of E.mergen – C, which is full of electrolytes, and will help with altitude adjustment.

Day 3: Ollantaytambo Archeological Site Breakfast beginning at 6:00 am. And pickup at your hotel at 9:00.a.m. walk to the archeological site in Ollantaytambo. You will spend about 3- 4hrs.at this site. There are several temples of pink granite and the famous Princess’ Bath. Lunch in Ollantaytambo at the “Restaurant of the Universal Heart” supported by Path of the Heart. If you would like, you can help serve lunch to the school children who eat here free of charge, spend the afternoon visiting the local market and take a walk through the town which has been inhabited and is unchanged since Inca times. See how guinea pigs (cuy) are raised for food, special celebrations, and medicinal uses.

If you have extra time you will hike Pinkulluna Mountain which overlooks the town of Ollantaytambo. About a 2 mile hike and 500 ft. elevation gain. Dinner on your own. (B, L)

Day 4: Cusco City Tour Breakfast at the hotel starting at 6:00 a.m. and morning drive to Cusco for a walk starting at 10:00 am. To visit the famous local market of San Pedro. There is a huge diversity of products available. You will see the 12 square stones at Inca Roca Palace in Cusco. You will also visit the Cathedral and the Temple of the Sun. Lunch at the Main square of Cusco, Afternoon visit to Sacsayhuaman, Tambomachay and Qenqo. Famous archeological sites around Cusco. Return to the hotel in Ollantaytambo by 6:00 p.m., Dinner on your own (B, L)

Day 5: 1st day Inka Trail – Sacred Valley – Paucarcancha Breakfast beginning at 6:00 a.m. And pickup at your hotel at 9:00.a.m. you will catch the private transportation to Km 82, where you begin the Inca Trail trek. After meeting our porters, you cross the Urubamba River by bridge and continue along the river with views of the Vilcanota mountain range and Mt. Veronica (18,745 ft). Traveling through the narrow Cusichaca valley, you’ll see vestiges of an ancient culture and its agriculture practices. You will pass by WayllaBamba (9,025 ft), before stopping to camp in the archaeological site of Paucarcancha. (B, L, D)
Inca Trail Hike Details: 5.62 miles | 6 Hours Altitude: from 8,910 ft to 9600 ft.

Day 6: 2nd day Inka Trail Paucar Cancha – Llullucha Pampa Wake up Tea (Many choices) 6:00 a.m. Breakfast beginning at 7:00 a.m. Today see some of the most spectacular scenery Peru has to offer, including a cloud forest that contains the rare Queñua tree. Our Inka Trail continues as the trail ascends steeply before reaching a large area of pampas below the first pass, were we will see the natural habitat of Llamas and Alpacas. Camp overnight at Llulluchapampa (12,300 ft), with a breathtaking view of Mt. Huayanay. (B,L,D)
Inca Trail Hike Details: 4.37 miles | 5 Hours Altitude: from 9,600 ft. to 12,700 ft.

Day 7: 3 Day Inka Trail Llullucha Pampa – Phuyu Patamarca Wake up Tea (Many choices) 5:30 a.m. Breakfast beginning at 6:30 a.m., physically; this is the most strenuous day of the trek, as the trail ascends steeply toward the pass of Warmi Wañusca pass (13,680 ft). From there, the trail descends to the Pacay Mayo River and then climbs slowly past the ruins of Runkuraqay. Another pass takes you from Runku Raqay to the ruins of Sayac Marca (12,628 ft). Along the way, you’ll see some advanced Inca engineering remains before coming upon the beautiful ruins of Phuyu Patamarca (12,000 ft), your camp for the night. (B,L,D)
Inca Trail Hike Details: 8.75 miles | 8 Hours Altitude: from 12,700 ft to the pass 13920 ft. and to over night at 11850 ft.

Day 8: 4 day Inka Trail Phuyu Patamarca – Machu Picchu Wake up Tea (Many choices) 6:00 a.m. Breakfast beginning at 7:00 a.m. from this camp site, you follow the flagstone trail that winds sharply down into the cloud forest to the ruins of Wiñay Wayna (8,855 ft), located along the same watercourse as Phuyupatamarca and contains one of the most amazing Inca ruins. After a two-hour walk through a cloud forest along the Inca Trail, you at last come to a highlight of our Inka Trail: Machu Picchu (7,875 ft), entering through Inti Puku, the Sun Gate. After a brief tour, stay overnight at a hotel in nearby Aguas Calientes. Dinner on your own. (B, L)

Day 9: Machu Picchu – ruins Full day You will expend the morning exploring the amazing site of Machu Picchu by waking up early (depends how you feel) to catch sunrise over the ruins. The remainder of the day holds various opportunities for your own exploration; with your guide explore the ruins for about 4 hours. You can do some meditation at this magical place if you wish. Buffet lunch with a view of the Sacred Mountains. Afternoon free for you to explore more or return to Hotel in Aguas Calientes. Dinner on your own. (B, L)

Day 10: Wayna Picchu Mountain This day you will take the bus early to the site of Machu Picchu, for a climb to the sacred peak of Wayna Picchu (8500 ft), 2 hours aprox. Expend the afternoon free to relax or to do more activities on your own, lunch and Dinner on your own. (B)

Day 11: Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco. You will take the train back to Ollantaytambo, after your personal experience of Machu Picchu town and the Market, also where you are transferred to the vibrant Chinchero Market. Here local artisans will give you an introduction to their textile creations, known to be among the best in Peru. Take advantage of this last-minute shopping opportunity before returning to your Cusco hotel for the evening. (B, L)

Day 12: Cusco – Lima – home Morning free to enjoy the Beautiful Inca Streets and colorful Markets of the city of Cusco with your guide or by yourself. Back to the hotel to be transfer to the Airport for your Afternoon flight to Lima and then connect home. (B, L)
